Chain length is the single most common thing men get wrong when buying online — usually by going too short. Here's where each length actually lands.

Where each length sits

  • 18" — at the base of the neck, near the collarbone. Sits above a crew neckline. Reads as a choker on most adult men.
  • 20" — just below the collarbone, right at or slightly under a crew neck. The most versatile length and the safest default.
  • 22" — mid-chest, clearly visible over a t-shirt. The standard choice for a chain you want seen, and the usual pick for a pendant.
  • 24" — lower chest, near the sternum. Statement length, and the right choice for layering under a shorter chain.
  • 26"+ — below the sternum. Deliberate streetwear territory.

Build changes everything

Those numbers assume an average build. Adjust:

Larger neck or broader chest: add 2 inches. A 20" chain on a 17" neck sits like an 18" does on someone smaller.

Slimmer build: the standard numbers work as listed, and 20" is often the sweet spot.

The quick check: measure your neck circumference and add 4 inches for a chain that sits at the collarbone, or 6–8 inches for one that sits mid-chest.

Chain width matters too

A wide chain at a short length reads heavy and cramped. If you're buying 12mm or above, go 22" minimum — the proportions need the room. Full breakdown in the Cuban Link Chain Width Guide.

If it's for a pendant

Go 22" or 24". A pendant on an 18" chain sits awkwardly high, close to the throat. Our Iced Dove Dog Tag Pendant is built for that mid-chest drop.

Men's Chain Length Questions

What length chain should a man wear?

20 inches is the most versatile default — it sits just below the collarbone. Go 22 inches if you want the chain clearly visible over a t-shirt, or if you're hanging a pendant on it.

What length chain for a pendant?

22 or 24 inches. A pendant on an 18-inch chain sits uncomfortably high near the throat. The extra length lets the pendant fall at mid-chest where it reads properly.

How do I measure my chain size?

Measure your neck circumference with a soft tape. Add about 4 inches for a chain that sits at the collarbone, or 6 to 8 inches for one that sits mid-chest.

Should a bigger guy wear a longer chain?

Yes — add roughly 2 inches to the standard recommendations if you have a larger neck or broader chest, since the chain has more distance to cover before it drops.
