What you pay for
Stone size is the biggest driver — and it isn't linear. Doubling carat weight more than doubles the price, because larger rough is harder to grow and cut cleanly.
Stone count. A pavé hoop with 60 small stones takes far more labour to set than a single solitaire stud, even when the total carat weight is similar.

What a $15 pair is hiding
Below about $40, you're usually not looking at moissanite. You're looking at cubic zirconia described ambiguously, or a plated base metal that'll go green. The other tell is the metal description. "Silver-coloured" and "silver-tone" are not sterling silver. Look for 925 stamped or stated explicitly.
